September 2026
SAGE-M is the ARC Training Centre for Sustainable and Green Economy Manufacturing. It officially opened for business in June, bringing together four universities, government science, and a dozen industry and international partners to train the next generation of researchers in sustainable and green chemistry driven by cutting-edge catalysis development.
This newsletter is where we'll share our progress, our people, Centre news, and what's coming next. Glad to have you with us!
I am delighted by the energy and enthusiasm that have characterised the Centre's first few months. We have made strong progress in bringing together our people and partners, drawing on expertise from across academia and industry, while establishing a collaborative environment focused on addressing important challenges in sustainable and green manufacturing through cutting-edge catalysis development.
The Centre has made an excellent start, with research activities getting underway straight out of the blocks. Our first PhD student, Peter Scott, has commenced research in biocatalysis focused on antibiotic development in the Murray group at Monash. We have also been delighted to welcome Kemin, Micronisers, and Nexsen as new Partner Organisations to the Centre, and the expertise and industry perspectives they will bring to our activities.
The Executive Committee held its first meeting back in June, and got stuck into a bit of everything, including:
We're lucky to have guidance from a group of remarkable professionals spanning industry, academia, and peak bodies. Their perspective will be instrumental in driving the Centre towards its goals.
The Centre onboarded our first postdoctoral fellow, based at Monash University.
We also welcomed our first PhD student, who started his candidature under CI Lauren Murray.
"Hi, my name is Peter Scott. I completed my Bachelor of Science at the Australian National University in 2020 majoring in chemistry. In 2024, I then went on to complete my Honours in chemistry at Monash University under the supervision of Professor Andrea Robinson. The focus of my project was on the synthesis of antifungal peptides - including some unnatural amino acids - with the goal of chelating metal ions to disrupt fungal metal homeostasis. After a few years in the pharmaceutical industry, I have returned to Monash to undertake my PhD with Dr. Lauren Murray, focusing on using biocatalysis for the synthesis of complex molecules. The project aims to develop an efficient and scalable route to an antibiotic of industrial interest."
SAGE-M will be at Monash Precinct Network's Industry-Research Collaboration Exchange, The Future of Industry โ an executive gathering connecting industry leaders with research expertise, featuring a ministerial address, an AI keynote, panel discussions, and a showcase of Victoria's innovation ecosystem. Come along and say hi!
Three-day masterclass with Prof. Nicholas A. Meanwell
Attention medicinal chemists at all career stages looking to build or sharpen their drug design skills! Hosted by MedChem Australia, this masterclass covers practical strategies for compound design, optimisation, and problem solving, including isosteres, toxicophores, metabolism, and emerging drug design strategies.
We're finalising our Strategic Plans and KPIs, due by mid-December, and continuing to recruit our first cohort of postgraduate students. Watch this space โ and the next edition โ for updates on both.
